Design of an Alkaline Electrolysis Stack
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 Renewable energy promises a green energy future for the world. Hence, the electrol- ysis process has been identi ed as the most important method to produce hydrogen using renewable energy source. Moreover, during the last few years, people have enhanced the interest to expand and use the alkaline water electrolysis technology in di erent elds. Thus, the design of high performance compact electrolysis stack according to the selected speci cation is very important. The main purpose of this research work is to design and fabricate a compact high performance electrolysis stack and to observe the electrolysis performance. Under t…
Fuel Characterization and Process Analysis of Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Algae
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 The conversion of microalgae to biocrude by hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a technology that could reduce the use of fossil fuels. The aim of this study was to provide insight in the fuel characterization and process analysis of algae HTL. Three microalgae species were provided for the fuel characterization. The Phaeodactylum tricornutum algae were received as a slurry, while the Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris were received as dried powders. Experiments by TGA, proximate and ultimate analysis were performed on the three algae species. A process analysis of algae HTL was carried out in Aspen Plus. Properties f…
Preliminary photochemical studies of fluorene in various aqueous media
2014
- The current study investigates the direct photochemical degradation of aqueous fluorene with the aid of a 125W polychromatic medium, pressure Hg lamp. The purpose was to test the effectiveness of the lamp in irradiation using fluorene spiked solution as substrate. A 700 ml volume of fluorene solution of 0.002 mg/l was irradiated batch-wise at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 48 h. The amount of fluorene removal was studied for fluorene solutions prepared from , neutral (distilled water), acidic (by adjusting pH with hydrochloric acid, HCl), basic (by adjusting pH with sodium hydroxide, NaOH) and saline (addition of sodium chloride, NaCl) solutions and there was 95.95, 92.35, 96.65 and 97.15 % remo…
Characterization of coating on graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) To improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries, the graphite anode can be treated with special coating. Thus the charge transfer resistance through the material can be lowered and thereby enable e.g. faster charging. The amount of coating is essential the improve the performance. The thesis is investigating thermogravimetric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as a method to identify an optimal relation between the amount of coating and the charge transfer resistance. There is found that lower material resistivity gives a higher weight loss where it is assumed that the coating is oxidising, methods for both a relative difference in th…
Ammonia Fuelled Solid Oxide Fuel Cell to Power Maritime Applications
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) Ammonia fuelled solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems are regarded as a promising alternative for energy production due to high efficiency and low environmental impact. Ammonia is a carbon free compound with high energy density, low production cost and much simpler transport-and storage properties than hydrogen. The state-of-the-art SOFC contains a Ni/YSZ anode which has proven to be an effective catalyst to crack ammonia at intermediate temperatures (∼700°C). In this study an experimental work was conducted using an Open Flange SOFC test set-up with a planar anode-supported single cell consisting of a Ni/YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte, and LSM cathod…
Preparation and Characterization of Spherical Nickel Silicide Powder by Inductively Coupled Plasma Spheroidization for Additive Manufacturing
2022
Author's accepted manuscript Metal alloy powder with spherical-shaped morphology, high flowability, and packing density is the main requirements for metal-based additive manufacturing (AM). Among metal alloys, nickel silicide is considered as a potential candidate due to its unique properties such as high melting point, good electrical conductivity, as well as high corrosion and wear resistance. However, the fabrication of spherical nickel silicide powder has proven to be a challenging task. In the present work, spherical NiSi16 alloy powders were synthesized by inductively coupled plasma spheroidization (ICPS). The influence of the feed rate on the properties of the as-prepared powder was …
Chemistry of Desiccant Properties of Carbohydrate Polymers as Studied by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ie302199k The combination frequency of water molecule in near-infrared spectroscopy is very useful for studying water molecular adsorption on solid surfaces. The absorption is purely from water molecules, and the variation in the absorption bands reflects the change in the environment of the water molecules on a surface. This variation, in turn, reflects the nature of the functional groups on the surface. Recently, Christy used this information in combination with second-derivative techniques to probe the surface of hydrothermally tre…
